Snippets from my five-year diary.

March 29.

*1970 (age 12): Happy Easter. I’m the Easter Bunny since I don’t believe anymore. Went to Uncle Pete’s house for a get-together. 50 people came.

Imagine, admitting I didn’t believe in the Easter Bunny anymore! Although, it did give me the chance to be the egg hider, which was a promotion in my parents’ eyes.

The holiday get-togethers at Uncle Pete’s were always fun. All the cousins, aunt, uncles, and Grandma would gather for a day of fun, food, and festivities. They always had egg hunts for the kids (after egg-dying). An Easter Hat contest – Grandma always won 1st Place.

*1971 (age 13): Mon. It was Easter one year ago today. Not today though.

Not much must have happened that day.

*1972 (age 14): Wed. Had fun yesterday at [the] Park. Slept in again and stayed up late and watched Mannix.

Yesterday’s entry showed my friends and I went to Roeding Park – a great place to hang out when we were younger. There was Playland (rides), a zoo, and Storybook Land (fairy tales and fun things to see and do. Plus, there was a small lake and we would rent a paddle boat for 30 minutes to an hour.

Mannix, popular then. And now, on reruns.

*1973 (age 15): Thur. Got my bike – now the wheel is perfectly straight.

A crooked wheel is definitely a problem. It's good I got it fixed.

*1974 (age 16): Fri. I’m in a lot better mood today. I’m getting a “B” in English, a “B” in Biology, and an “A” in Photography, probably a “B” in Algebra & P.E. & hopefully an “A” but at least a “B” in Spanish. Had a test in Driver’s ed today. Me & Bob were laying ball in the front yard and truck drove by and stopped.

Not sure why I had been in a bad mood, as nothing was mentioned before this post. Grades were always a big deal. My dad would wait for the report cards from my brother and me. Thankfully, mine was decent – I remember it was always stressful until I knew what I was getting.

Not sure of the significance of the truck stopping, but it must have been important back then.

Note to self: Though grades were a big deal and will be through the rest of school and college, remember you are not defined by your grades. Let yourself make mistakes and be average once in a while – it will take a lot of pressure off. Trust me.
